What you need to purchase a firearm:

Long guns (Rifles and Shotguns):
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must have a valid California drivers license or valid California picture identification.
- You cannot have any felony convictions or prohibiting misdemeanors. (For definitions use link at the bottom of this page.)
- You cannot be the subject of any restraining orders.

Handguns:
- You must be at least 21 years of age.
- You must have a valid California drivers license or valid California picture identification.
- You must have a Handgun Safety Certificate or one of the acceptable equivalents (active or retired law enforcement or military identification). If you need a Handgun Safety Certificate you may purchase a study guide at the store as well as take the 30 question test at the store.
- You must present "proof of residency" on or before the date of pick-up. "Proof of residency" is a utility bill, vehicle registration, voter registration, and some others that state your name and your current address on the bill dated no more than 90 days previous to the date of firearm registration. All Non-United States Citizens:
- In addition to the above requirements you will need to present 3 months or 90 days "proof of residency". Usually this means three utility bills (or equal) none of which are older than 90 days from the date of firearm registration. You will also be required to present your I.N.S. card (or green card).
All Armed Forces Or Military Personel Based In California:
- In addition to the above requirements you will need to present your current orders stating that you are based in California. This will be used in place of the "proof of residency" requirement. You will be required to present your current military identification at the time of firearm registration.
